Things To Do Family Events Summer School Holidays 2018 In South Wales

The 6 week summer school holidays will soon be here. We have compiled a list of the top free and paid events that will be taking place in and around Cardiff.

There’s something for all the family, so beat the boredom, get out, have some fun and make those memories!


Isle of Fire
at Barry Island

When: July 21st & 22nd from 8.30pm
Details: The magical fire garden returns featuring live music,
beautiful street entertainers, Fire dance shows from Flame Oz, Lantern Parade
and the Viking Ship complete with pirates.  New for 2018 – The mesmerising
Mechanical Heart by Blacksmith Felicity Jones, a beating heart with light and
music. From 8.30pm to 11pm each night.


The Big Cheese – Caerphilly 

When: July 27th
from 3pm, 28th & 29th from 11am
Details: Set in the
shadows of one of Europe’s largest Castles the town of Caerphilly comes to life
as people of all ages come to The Big Cheese®, an extravaganza of street
entertainers, living history encampments, music, dance, traditional funfair,
folk dancing, falconry, fire eating, minstrels, troubadours and much more. The
Big Cheese is a ‘must see’ attraction for all visitors, celebrating its 21st
year in 2018. Portraying the history, heritage and culture of Caerphilly.
Families from all over the country flocked to Caerphilly to experience this fun
filled programme of activities agnd entertainment.


Ice Cream Festival in Cardiff – **UPDATE: This event has since been cancelled**

When: August 3rd
Details: The first ICE
CREAM FESTIVAL is coming to Cardiff in summer 2018! Sure, you can enjoy ice
cream in one cone or cup…but why settle for something so basic when you can
take ice cream to a whole other level?
Eat yourself through the new, and exclusive ice cream creations of your
favorite local manufacturers. We bring all the local ice cream parlours
together in one place. And you will be able to try every single taste.
Next to a cozy lounge area you will find relaxing summer beats and many
freezing specials. Welcome to the Cardiff Ice Cream Festival

Details: The beach is back! Cardiff will once again
create its own seafront with the return of the Cardiff Bay Beach, Friday July
28 – Sunday September 3, to entertain families in the traditional way
throughout the school holidays. Entry is FREE  with additional charges
for on-site facilities. The beach will be located in Roald Dahl Plass on the waterfront of
Cardiff Bay, open from 10am to 8pm Sunday – Thursday, and 10am to 10pm Friday
and Saturday, and will be a key feature of the summer-long Cardiff Festival

CardiffPride – City Hall Cardiff

When: August 24th

Details: Families,
individuals, groups, organisations, all are welcome at Pride Cymru to showcase
the true diversity and equality across Wales. The most colourful event in
Cardiff’s calendar will be turning the City Hall Lawn and surrounding streets
into a carnival of diversity, with funfair rides, amusements and entertainment
from some of the UK’s biggest names in music.

Details: Round up
your friends and family and get on down to our Wild West Family Fun Day at Tŷ
Hafan! With a whole heap of attractions, we can guarantee y’all have a wild
day! We have a funfair, fantastic craft stalls and of course our hospice tours!
Enjoy some line dancing and games at the main stage, or just kick back and
watch some of our brilliant live singers, choirs and bands. Head over to our saloons
to grab some lunch from a range of local food specialists. Gates will open at
12pm and close at 5pm. Tickets on yonder gate will be limited, so we recommend
y’all buy in advance for guaranteed entry.

Vintage For Victory – Library Gardens, Whitchurch Village, Cardiff

When: 14th & 15th

This Boutique Vintage Festival is probably the best kept secret
in the event calendar. Inspired by the Romance and Glamour of Vintage Fashion
& Nostalgia we are delighted to announce the return of the Vintage For
Victory weekend to The Library Gardens in Whitchurch Village, a leafy suburb
of Cardiff. Set in the past it celebrates all that was great from the 1940s 50s
& 60s. We invite you to drift back in time, to those halcyon days and soak
up the unique atmosphere in the period costume of your chosen era. It is an
opportunity for you, friends and family to dress up to the nines in timeless
style, amongst a crowd of people doing the same. With a fantastic musical line
up to cater for all ages, Jive & Lindy Hop lessons, get ready to dance the
day away.

Set in the Vale of Glamorgan’s picturesque
Countryside, WelshFest is an Outdoor Weekend Live Music Festival just a stones
throw away from the Welsh Capital. WelshFest 2018 will take
place in the beautiful grounds of the Spectacular Coedarhydyglyn Estate less
than a mile from Culverhouse Cross.   We are bringing together a
modern mix of Music Genre’s,  Arts and Poetry, featuring some of the
finest original live performing artists from all over Wales. Over 100 Acts Across 4 Live
Stages. The Festival Wales has been waiting for!!!   Rock,
Indie, Ska, Pop, Blues, Folk, Classical, House, Techno, WelshFest has something
for everyone.  Three days of non stop live music.  Check out
our  Family Activities and other Attractions at the festival too. 
 As well as our Outdoor Live Acts, there’s 3 days of non stop DJ’s in the
Dance Tent and WelshFest will also be showcasing ‘Talent Cymru’, the first
Event of its kind ever to be held in Wales. Camp for the weekend or come for the
day and join in the fun.


Grand Medieval Melee – Cardiff Castle

When: 18th & 19th

Price: £6.50

Details: With all the hustle and bustle of a medieval
encampment, music, games, displays and Have-a-go archery activities. A new
Tournament of the Knights featuring The Warwick Warriors, colourful tents,
noble knights and fascinating falconry demonstrations create a great day of
time-travelling and a fabulous family day out.
