Carrying on from my previous post (post pregnancy diets) I have decided to do a little research on dieting whilst breastfeeding.
As most of you will know I am getting hitched in September this year, and having already bought my wedding dress prior to getting pregnant I am determind to fit back into it!
Firstly I want to find out if it is actually possible to diet whilst breastfeeding and secondly to find out the best way to do it.
The NHS website recommends sticking to a healthy diet of fresh fruit and vegtables and such like but there are also certain foods which should be avoided. These include not eating more than two portions of oily fish a week and avoiding drinks with caffeine in them as this can prevent babies from sleeping and keep them awake. Obviously smoking and alchol consumption should be avoided also.
Certain medications that shouldn’t be taken whilst you’re breastfeeding include aspirin, co codamol, phenylephrine and guaifenesin.
I have to say I thought I knew pretty much all I needed to know about breastfeeding but I am actually surprised by what I have found out, even things which after I read them I thought well really that does make sense and is common sense. I have pre packed my materity bag with co codamol as I remember from my first labour being very sore afterwards and not being able to get pain relief as quickly as I needed it, I will now swap this in place of paracetemol.
It is recommended to wait a couple of months before starting to diet. This allows your breasts to make a healthy supply of milk, and if you reduce your calorie intake too early, it can reduce the amount of milk you are able to produce. A calore intake of 1,800 is ideal whilst breastfeeding.
Do not lose more than 2lbs a week as again any more than this can affect your milk supply.
Don’t be tempted to try diet pills or shakes, it is best to lose weight naturally. Avoiding junk food can quickly help you lose those extra few pounds and breastfeeding has been proved to help lose the baby weight, as the baby feeds its helps your womb contract to its former size.
Make sure you drink lots of water, this is essential to breast milk production, recommended 8 glasses a day should do the trick.
If you are planning on exercising make sure you consult your doctor before starting, and when you do start, start slowly with a light 10-15 minute workout. Your doctor, midwife or breastfeeding consultant can always be sought to find out further information on dieting whilst breastfeeding.
