Incentive To Breastfeed

I'm sure most of you will be aware of the latest headlines regarding breastfeeding. "Breastfeeding: New Mums To Get Shopping Vouchers"

This is a new government funded initiative to attempt to get new mums to breastfeed.

Vouchers will available to spend at Matalan, John Lewis, Mothercare or supermarkets.

I myself am quite offended by the idea that the government think that us women can bribed with a bit of retail therapy.

Surely this is something personal, a mothers choice, and her right to decide how she wishes to feed her baby.

Now I may sound a bit anti breastfeeding but I can assure that is far from the truth!

I do agree that breast is best, after all it provides antibodies and vital nutrients to your baby that shop bought formula can not. Plus there's the added benefit of the bonding that takes place between mum and baby when breastfeeding.

When my daughter was born I had always planned on breastfeeding. I loved the thought of providing for my child naturally and getting that special one on one time and closeness with my baby, but sadly that wasn't to be.

After all not all women are able to breastfeed for one reason or another.

In my case I was unable to as my daughter was born with a tongue tie. You can read more on this HERE.

A tongue tie is a shorter than normal flap of skin underneath the tongue which restricts it's movement. Therefore my daughter was unable to latch on to the breast. I did however decide to express my breast milk so that myself and my partner could bottle feed it to her.

In this new scheme mothers will be given the vouchers if they breastfeed until their babies are atleast 6 weeks old, a further £80 will then be given if they continue breastfeeding at six months.

I believe that breastfeeding should be encouraged and promoted, but I am against there being a financial incentive to persuade mothers to breastfeed.

After all you know what is best for you and your baby, why should we let anyone else try to persuade us otherwise?

I love to know how you feel about the proposed scheme. Please get in touch with me via the contact page or please leave your comments below x
